Vitamin B3 or niacin is one of eight B-Complex vitamins. Similar to other B vitamins niacin helps the body break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and convert them to energy. Sources of niacin include yeast, meat, eggs, nuts, and green vegetables. Niacin greatly reduces depression and anxiety and has been used in the treatment of schizophrenia and high cholesterol. Dr. Abram Hoffer In his book “Niacin: the real story” describes how niacin can reduce harmful cholesterol in the bloodstream. Niacin is also the best substance to elevate high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the good cholesterol).
Many people after taking niacin begin to feel a warm sensation called a niacin flush. The skin on the face, neck, ears, and upper body will turn red lasting for 10-20 minutes. This happens as a result of the blood vessels dilating. Mobilizing fat cells then release toxins into the blood where they can be removed by the body. Each individual will have a different sensation and tolerance, for this reason, it is best to start out with a small amount of niacin. 50mg to 100mg is a good start. Gradually increasing until flushing is noticed. People who need the vitamin will take longer to flush and people who don’t need much niacin will flush earlier.
